Biography

Wire of a master mason, he learns the drawing by recopying engravings from the collection of his father, then while following courses of drawing to the Academy of Aix-en-Provence. In 1796, it settles with Paris where he becomes the pupil of Jacques-Louis David and earns his living by making murals. In 1802, it goes to Rome where it draws the old monuments and paints scenes of the life of the artists. It is made known also for its interiors of churches and convents, in a very dark Dutch style, contrary to its neo-classic formation. In 1809, it poses for Ingres, which it knew in Paris in the workshop of David, on the roof of its studio to the Villa Médicis.

After its return in France in 1819, it becomes preserving Musée of Louvre, in 1826, then of the collection of the Château of Versailles, in 1830.

It is withdrawn in Aix after the Révolution of 1848. To its death in 1849, the contents of its workshop, its drawings like its collections of Dutch and Italian art of the XVIIe century are bequeathed to the town of Aix and constitute the funds of the Musée Granet, named in its honor.
