François Marie II della Rovere

François Marie II Della Rovere , born with Pesaro the February 20th 1549 and died in Casteldurante (today Urbania) the April 23rd 1631, was a Condottiere Italy N and the last duke of Urbin.

Wire of Guidobaldo II della Rovere, sovereign Duke of Urbin, Count of Montefeltro, and Vittoria Farnèse, it accepted a severe education and lived of 1565 with 1568 at the court of Spain. It succeeded his father with the head of the duchy in 1574.

In 1580, to face the budgetary difficulties of the duchy of Urbin, it sold for 100  000 ecus the duchy of Sora and Arce, family inheritance of origin, in Giacomo Boncompagni. The September 15th 1585, it accepted from the pope the title of “sérénissime” and was armed the same day knight with the Golden Fleece. Finances of the duchy cleansed, it continued a policy of tight management and renonça as much as it could with the increase in the taxes, thus passing to the posterity like a popular prince.

His wife Lucrèce d' Este died in 1598 without him to give children. The duchy being likely to fall into the field from the Church if it did not have a heir, it requested of the pope the authorization of remarier, who was granted to him. He thus married with Casteldurante in second weddings the April 26th 1599 his cousin Livia della Rovere, 36 years younger, in order to be able to give a heir to the duchy and to avoid the extinction of the line of Della Rovere. The May 16th 1605 Frederic Ubaldo came in the world; it was crowned very young duke and married Claudia de Médicis in 1621, giving even to François Marie II a little girl, Vittoria.

But Frederic Ubaldo died prematurely the June 29th 1623, leaving derechef the duchy with his father, which, noting the extinction of his line, bequeathed by will the December 20th 1624, all goods of della Rovere to the Papal States. He died in Casteldurante the April 23rd 1631.

He is buried in the church of the Crucifix of Casteldurante, today Urbania.
