François Louis Rousselet de Châteaurenault

Rousselet (François-Louis), marquis de Châteaurenault (or Châteaurenaut, or Châteauregnaud). Born in 1637 - Died in Paris in 1716. It was Vice-amiral and Marshal of France.

Biography

Very young person, it takes part in the battles of the Dunes at the time of the seat of Dunkirk (1658). In 1661, it becomes sign of the navy, and it is distinguished with the catch from Djidjelli by the duke from Beaufort in 1664. It is named Captain in 1672, and purges their pirates the seas of Raising. In 1673, it is Chef of squadron and fights victoriously the admiral Michiel de Ruyter in 1675 in the the North Sea. In 1677, off Spain, with six ships it victoriously faces the twenty-five vessels of the Dutch admiral Cornelis Evertsen.

In 1689, like Lieutenant-general of the naval armies, ordering fleet intended to help the king Jacques II in his conquest of Ireland (War of the League of Augsburg), it beats the English admiral Herbert with Bantry Bay. The year according to, it brought back from Ireland the French troops with 18.000 Irishmen.

It takes part in the Bataille of the course Béveziers (1690) and in the Bataille of Lagos (1693). He is commander of squadron in 1694. During the War of succession of Spain, it manages to convey the Spanish galleons charged with gold of the Mexico until Vigo, where its fleet was partly destroyed by the English of the admiral George Rooke. In 1703, it receives the stick of Marshal of France. He becomes lieutenant de Haute and Low Brittany (1704) and, as from this moment, does not take again any more the sea. In 1705, it is made knight of the Ordre of the Holy Spirit, in spite of an ascent commoner: paternal side, the marquis de Châteaurenault counts a great-grandfather and a great-great-grandfather merchants in Lyon, lords of Pardieu, become aldermen of the city, and maternal side, it goes down from a family of Parisian clothiers (Compans family). However, it was combined with the powerful family of Gondi: his/her father, Francois, were the nephew of Albert de Gondi. This is why, Jean-François Paul de Gondi (1613-1679), the grandson of Albert, coadjutor of Paris (1643), cardinal of Retz (1652) and archbishop of Paris (1654-1662), was the guard of the François-Louis young person at the beginning of his career.
