Sir François Charles Stanislas Langelier (Holy-Rosalie, December 24th, 1838 - Sillery, February 8th, 1915), lawyer and Canadian politician , was in particular professor (1863-1915), lawyer, provincial Député (1873-1875, 1878-1881), Maire of Quebec (1882-1890), appointed federal (1884-1898), Juge (1898-1911) and Lieutenant-governor of Quebec (1911-1915).

Biography

François Langelier is the son of Louis Sebastien Langelier, farmer, and of Julie Esther Casault. In 1861, it obtains a license in Droit of the Université Laval then, of 1861 with 1863, continues studies of right to the Université of Paris. In 1863, he becomes law professor at the Laval university. In 1864, he marries Virginia Légaré. Of 1867 with 1869, he is president of the Canadian Institut of Quebec.

To the Québécois general election of 1871, it is presented in the form of a candidate of the liberal party in the district of Bagot and east demolishes. In 1871 and 1872, it writes a parliamentary chronicle in the newspaper the Nation of Saint-Hyacinthe. In 1873, he is elected liberal Député of Montmagny at the time of a by-election. With the Québécois general election of 1875, it east demolishes in Montmagny. It presents a request in cancellation of election due to undue interference of the clergy. Granting its request, the Court cancels the election in Montmagny, which involves the behavior of a by-election, to which, however, Langelier does not present itself.

As from 1876, it practices the right as lawyer, parallel to his career of professor and with its political activities. To the Québécois general election of 1878, it is presented again and is elected appointed liberal of Portneuf. During this mandate, it occupies in the liberal government of Jolly the posts of police chief of the Grounds of the Crown (1878-1879) and of treasurer of the province (1879). In 1880, it takes part in Quebec with the foundation of the newspaper the Voter . In 1880, it is presented in the form of city council man of Quebec in the district Saint-Louis and east demolishes. At the time of the Québécois general election of 1881, it east demolishes in Portneuf.

It is elected city council man of Quebec in the Midsummer's Day district in 1882. May 1st, 1882, the municipal council indicates it, unanimously, Maire of Quebec, a station which it will preserve until 1890. In 1884, it is re-elected to advise Midsummer's Day district. In 1884, he is elected appointed liberal with the House of Commons of Canada at the time of a federal by-election in the district of Mégantic. In 1886, it is elected city council man Saint-Roch district. With the federal general election of 1887, he is elected appointed liberal of the district of Quebec-Center. March 1st, 1890, it is withdrawn as mayor of Quebec. This same year, he however is re-elected like advising, this time in the district of the Palate. With the federal general election of 1891, he is re-elected appointed of Quebec-Center. In 1892, he marries in second weddings Marie-Louise Braun. In 1892, he becomes senior of the Faculty of Law of the Laval university, station which he occupies until 1915. With the federal general election of 1896, he is re-elected appointed of Quebec-Center. In 1898, Langelier resigns like federal deputy.

Always in 1898, it is named judge of the Superior court of Quebec in the legal district of Montreal. From 1906 to 1911, he is judge as a temporary chief of the Superior court in the legal district of Quebec. In 1907, it is made knight by the king Edouard VII. In 1908, he is president of the festivals of the third centenary of Quebec. In 1911, it is named Lieutenant-governor of Quebec, station which it occupies until his death in 1915.

He dies February 8th, 1915 with Sillery and is buried with the cemetery Saint-Charles, in Quebec. The Langelier boulevard, in Quebec, is named in its honor, just like the boulevard of the same name in Montreal, and thus the subway station Langelier.
