Biography

aggregate Normalien and , it is interested early in the Chinese culture. He studied in the Chinese university of Beijing.

He is currently professor with the Université Paris VII and director of the Institute of the contemporary thought. He directs a collection to the University Presses of France and was director between 1995 and 1998 with the international College of philosophy.

He also played a part adviser near Western companies which wished to be established in China.

Work

The work of François Julien finds his unit in the topic of the otherness of the Chinese thought, and this in many fields: morals ( Dialog on morals ), art ( Naked impossible the ), but also the strategy, poetic creation, the relations between Master and raise, etc ( the Turning and the access ).

Its work wants to be at the same time sinological and philosophical: the declared strategy of François Julien is to use China like a lever to show the coherence and the level of development of another thought that the Western thought; it is an invitation “to be thought differently”.

Criticisms

The work of François Julien received several criticisms, in particular certain sinologists, the first of which Jean-François Billeter. This one mainly published two texts against François Julien and his method:

“How to read Wang Fuzhi? ”; this article is opposed to the book Procès or creation (1989);
Against François Julien (2006); this book criticizes the whole of the work of Julien.

François Julien answered the first of these texts in “Reading or projection: How to read (otherwise) Wang Fuzhi? ”.

Against François Julien reproach in Julien to have seen China which he wanted to see, and to exaggerate the Chinese otherness. This topic would be an ideological construction of the Chinese imperial capacity, that the mandarins, representatives well-read men of the central capacity, would have imposed to the missionaries Jesuits. From there, this “myth” would have contaminated sinology and the image in general that the Westerners have on China, through Leibniz, Voltaire, Marcel Granet, Victor Segalen… Julien, taking again this myth, would perpetuate this tradition tending to occult the true sources, policies, of the “Chinese thought”.
