François Joseph Paul, marquis de Grasse Tilly, count de Grasse (September 13rd 1722 - January 11th 1788) is an admiral French born with the castle Valettes with the Bar-sur-Loup in the the Alpes-Maritimes.

Biography

At the eleven years age, it enters the Ordre of Malta like page of the Large Master of the order. In 1734, of Fatty becomes Aspirant on the galères about Malta and, in 1740, it enters Royal the. In 1754 it is promoted Lieutenant. In 1762 it obtains its first command on the Prothée .

In 1776, begins the Guerre of independence of the United States of America, the French navy is seen entrusting the task to support the Americans. As a commander of division, on Robust the , of Fatty is useful under the orders of the admiral Louis Guillouet, count d' Orvilliers, at the time of the first battles of Ushant (or in English " Ushant") from July 23rd to 27th 1778. In 1779, it joined the fleet of the Count d' Estaing in the the Antilles. Then vice-admiral it is distinguished at the time of the battles of the Dominique and St Lucia in 1780 and of Tobago in 1781. He takes part in the catch of the Grenade and takes part in three engagements at the sides of the Count of Guichen against the Admiral Rodney at the time of the Bataille of Martinique.

Making veil since Santo Domingo on the City-of-Paris, with 3.000 men under the orders of the Marquis of Saint-Simon, it assists from Washington and Rochambeau. Of Fatty demounting the troops in Virginia and, a little later demolishes the British fleet at the time of the Bataille of bay of Chesapeake in September 1781. It puts in escape the English fleet and ensures the blockade of the coasts until the rendering of Lord Cornwallis, thus allowing the independence of the the United States. It is less lucky at the time of the Bataille of Saint-Kitts, where it is held in failure by the Admiral Hood. A little later in April 1782, given up by its subordinate Bougainville, it is overcome and made captive by the admiral George Brydges Rodney at the time of the Bataille of Holy the. A few months later it returns to France, publishes a Mémoire document in proof and, in 1784, it is discharged by a martial Cour. The Grasse rear-admiral dies on January 11th, 1788 in his castle of Tilly in the Yvelines close to Paris and is buried on January 16th, 1788 in the church Saint-Roch, Rue Saint-Honore in Paris. Its heart is transferred to Tilly in the chorus from the parish church, then in 1923 in the tomb of his wife.

Memorial

A monument commemorates the Grasse admiral and the sailors who helped the United States to conquer their independence with the Cape Henry Memorial with Fort Story in the town of Virginia Beach.

A statue commemorating the Grasse Admiral is drawn up with Grasse, on the place of the Course Honore Cresp. The base of the statue carries a quotation of George Washington, You were the referee of the war. '

English guns

The Congrès of the United States offered to the admiral de Grasse four guns 6 Pounder taken to the English at the time of the head office of Yorktown. They are placed compared to four openings in the grid of the castle of Tilly. The original guns however were molten during the French revolution. Reproductions were reinstalled in June 1976 for the bicentenary of the Indépendance of the United States.
