François Joseph Amédée Lamy , born with Mougins (the Alpes-Maritimes) the February 7th 1858 and dead the April 22nd 1900 at the time of the battle of Kousséri, is a French soldier.
It begins its career in 1879 while leaving as second lieutenant with the 1st regiment the Algerian riflemen. He discovers Saharan Africa, takes part in the French colonialisation in Tunisia then share with the Tonkin in 1884 and remains there until in 1886. Returned with Algiers in 1887 as aide-de-camp of the General ordering the division of Algiers, it joins again with the the Sahara and in particular the méhari of which it will prove the advantages. The desert the fascine and it learns how to live with little: “ Personally, I will be really happy only when I can live without drinking nor to eat. In this moment, I involve myself with this kind of existence, but I arrived only at poor results. I am still obliged to eat more than six Datte S with my meals: it is afflicting! ”.
It takes part in the mission Châtelier in 1893, in charge of the study of a railway project of way between the coast and Brazzaville and of botanical, geological and geographical studies. It is Châtelier which presents Fourreau to him with which it will assemble the Mission Foureau-Lamy in 1898 which must rejoin Algiers and the Lac Chad. It is at the time of this mission, having joined the Mission Joalland-Meynier and the Mission Nice, during the final confrontation with Rabah with Kousséri that Amédée, then commander and chief of 700 rifles, thirty riders and 4 guns, die at 42 years, at the side of the lieutenant wounded Meynier. This last will describe the death of the commander Lamy in several works.
Fort Lamy (current capital of Chad Ndjamena) was founded by Emile Gentil on May 29th, 1900 which gave him this name in its memory
There exists a Rue of Commander-Lamy in the 11th district of Paris.
