François Jaubert de Passa

François Jaubert De Passa is a hydrologist French Catalan, born the April 24th 1785 with Céret (the Eastern Pyrenees) and died in Passa (the Eastern Pyrenees) the September 16th 1856. Jaubert de Passa has work for water in an exceptional way.

Biography

It is the day before the Parisian revolutionary turning that is born “François Pierre Jacques Fidèle Jaubert de Passa”, whose name indicates an origin high placed in the company of the country. It is at the village of Passed, in the middle of the area of the Aspres, which it passes its childhood. Before regaining the country, François baits himself on the studies, following at the same time a legal, medical and artistic course, with great success. Its fame grows quickly, it does not have yet 21 years when it reaches the function of Listener of the Council of State, in 1806.

Then, finally returned in Catalonia to assist his sick father, it is named sub-prefect with Perpignan in 1813, then to advise prefecture in 1815. It is there that its true story starts. Because as of his more young age, François seized the importance of the nourishing earth. He considers the structuring of a better system of watering and organizes the Trade union of the Têt since 1818-1819. He writes the payment, and, later invested of a scientific expedition, will publish of it two dedicated works with waterings in the Eastern Pyrenees and in Spain (primarily in the Catalan Countries of the South) which makes authority in Europe, in particular in Germany. The purpose of its in addition to-Pyrenees observations are then to improve watering in France. Member of the Companies royal and central of agriculture, of the royal Company of the Antique dealers and the learned societies of Toulouse and Valencia, then member of the Institute of France, it always acts in a devoted way, with the characteristic to make benefit his area from origin of good number of technical discoveries and economic solutions outlined at the time of his national course.

Definitely faithful to the development of its ground of birth, it places its competence at the service of the General advice of the Eastern Pyrenees, where it is elected in 1830, which it chairs of 1848 1852, of which there remains elected until his death in 1856.

François Jaubert de Passa, that one presents today as hydrologist, studied, through the economic scenes and social, good number of aspect of the local life, of which some remain of topicality. In its works Mémoire testify on the culture to the Chêne-liège , Mémoire on the culture of the olive-tree , historical Essai on the Gipsies , as many fields, to which those of the history are added, the Linguistique, the Archéologie, the Littérature and the Géologie, which impassioned this rare man.

On the end of its life, it accompanies the arrival by the railroad in Perpignan. However, the history slightly lost the memory about Jaubert de Passa, perhaps because it does not provide an example in conformity with the tradition which consists in leaving its country because one has talent. On the contrary, Jaubert de Passa seems to show the opposite attitude. Expert of historical realities of the Catalan Country, this humanistic preferred to invest himself for the community property and the proximity rather than to succumb to the sirens of the State. Man of honor, it neglects in 1828 an invitation to become managing director of Odessa, in the Crimea, then a pulpit of professor of agriculture to the Botanical garden of Paris, and finally a post of inspector of agriculture in Africa.
