François Ier , born on May 11th 1414 with Valves, dead on July 18th 1450 with Vannes with the Castle of Hermine, duke of Brittany of 1442 with 1450, wire of Jean V, duke of Brittany, and Jeanne de France.
One of his/her brothers (and his heir), Gilles of Brittany, was a famous knight who represented in Brittany the party of alliance with England, policy to which the Breton princes and their court were opposed then. François Ier had made it stop and throw in prison in 1446. Gilles died there assassinated in 1450. Though it is not known if it had given the order of it or if this murder were the fact of its officer buildings, François was struck remorse and died by it some time later.
According to its will, it was buried in front of the furnace bridge of abbey the St-Saver of Redon, in country vannetais. Its tomb was moved in one of the vaults of the déambulatoire in 1780 and was destroyed with the Revolution. Its widow the Isabeau duchess of Scotland survived to him until 1494 then was buried in Vannes.

In spite of the protests of the court of Scotland, these two princesses were not recognized heiresses of the duchy. François Ier chooses for heir his brother Pierre de Guingamp. This one not having a child and to avoid any later dispute, the duke made marry his Marguerite oldest daughter with François d' Etampes, second in the order of succession, and the Marie junior with the largest baron de Bretagne Jean de Rohan.
