François Ier de Mantoue

François Ier Gonzague , in Italian Francesco I Gonzaga , is a noble Italian born in 1366 and dead the March 8th 1407 with Cavriana. It was the fourth captain of the people (capitano del Popolo) of the town of Mantoue (area of Lombardy in Italy).

Francois, only sons of Louis II of Mantoue and Alda d' Este, is 16 years old when his/her father dies in 1382. He will have to wait six years of “regency” of the council of Mantoue, that is to say 1388, to be actually named captain of the people .

Following his grandfather Guy and of his father, François will undergo full whip the consequences of the old confrontations between Milan and Mantoue which will lead. His/her father made in kind alleviate the conflict which opposed Barnabé Visconti and its own father Guy between the years 1350 and 1370, while marrying, as soon as it was possible, François with Agnès Visconti, girl of Barnabe. At the time of the marriage in 1380, François has fourteen years and Agnès eighteen. Galéas II, brother of Barnabe is deceased in August 1378 and Barnabé, who is considered only lord of Milan, indicated his two sons Ludovico and Rodolfo like his heirs in March 1379. The May 6th 1385, Jean Galéas Visconti, wire of Galéas II and nephew of Barnabe, captive fact this last with its two sons and seizes the power. The partisans of Barnabe flee of Milan and come to find refuge with Mantoue at Agnès. Barnabe dies in prison, poisoned, at the end of 1385. In spite of the standpoint of Agnes against Jean Galéas, François gets along well with this last and will on the occasion to be combined with him in various conflicts north-Italian. Then, beginning 1391, change of attitude: Francois, anxious of the abusive absolute power of Jean Galéas, starts to seek allies to be opposed to Milan and Visconti; at the same time, he accuses Agnès of adultery with one of the Milanese refugees with Mantoue. The February 7th 1391, it is decapitated. He will marry, two years later, Margherita Malatesta, which, alas, will bring in their descent genes of the gibbosity, dorsal or thoracic bump (the great-grandson of François and Margherita, Frederic will be called Uneven the ).

With the political plan, François will balance a long time enters, on the one hand, the need, guided by fear, to be in good relationship with Milan the gibeline, powerful and always threatening close lombarde, and on the other hand, reasonable subjection to the authority of Sérénissime Venice guelfe. The disease then death, in August 1402, of Jean Galéas will put a term at the Milanese conquests and the disproportionate ambitions of Visconti. Mantoue finally will be able to live without the permanent fear of invasion. François will leave the memory of a large builder and an important reformer of the statutes mantouans.

His second wife, in 1393, Margherita Malatesta (NC-1399), girl of Galeotto, lord of Rimini and Elisabetta da Varano, gave him two children:
  • Susanna, which will die young person,
  • Jean-François which will succeed to him in the capacity as captain of the people and will become the 1st marquis de Mantoue in 1433.

François Ier is deceased in 1407, in his 41e année.
