François II of Lorraine

François II , born with Nancy the February 27th 1572, dead the October 14th 1632, was count de Vaudémont, and briefly duke of Lorraine of the 21 to the November 26th 1625. It was wire of the duke Charles III and Claude of France.

Biography

Second wire of Charles III, it accepted the title of count de Vaudémont . His/her father appointed it general lieutenant of the ducal states during the voyages which carried out it in France, in 1594. The peace of 1594 with France enabled him to become governor and general lieutenant of the king in the cities and country of Toul and Verdun. It also accomplished for his father a diplomatic voyage in England, from September to October 1606. Scrambled with his brother in 1621, it joined the emperor and fights for him the German Protestants.

Its older brother died the July 31st 1624, and, not having wire, it had indicated to succeed his daughter to him Nicole of Lorraine, married to Charles de Vaudémont, the oldest son of Francois, by specifying that Charles held his authority of his wife. However the will of Rene II specified that duchy could be transmitted only in male line.

In his will, François will specify that it did not have " ever have the ambition to carry the crown in this monde" , but his/her Charles son was not satisfied with a position of Prince Consort and François was solved to allow him to arrive at his ends. In November 1625, François de Vaudémont, being pressed on the will of Rene II, asserted the duchy. The General states of Lorraine estimated its request legitimates and François de Vaudémont became duke on November 21st, 1625. He benefitted from it to refund his debts with ducal finances. Five days later, he abdicates in favor of his son, who becomes the duke Charles IV. He devotes himself then to the management of his counties of Vaudémont and Saline.

He protected the type-setter Nicolas Signac, who dedicated to him his collection of psalms published in 1630, and perhaps also its third book from airs with four parts of 1625.

Not having been able to marry the richissime Marie de Médicis, he had married in 1597 Christine de Salm (1575 † 1627), countess of Salm. They had:

  • Marguerite (1615 † 1672), married in 1632 with Gaston de France (1608 † 1660), duke of Orleans
  • Christine (1621 † 1622)
