François III of Mantoue

François III Gonzague , in Italian Francesco III Gonzaga , was a noble Italian born the March 10th 1533 with Mantoue and dead the February 22nd 1550 close to Mantoue. It was the second duke of Mantoue (area of Lombardy in Italy), titrated François III, and marquis de Montferrat (area of the Piedmont), titrated François Ist.

Francois, oldest son of Frederic II of Mantoue and Marguerite de Montferrat, is 7 years old when his/her father dies in 1540.

Regency will be assumed by his/her Marguerite mother and her two uncles, brothers of his father, Ercole, bishop of Mantoue and cardinal since 1527 and Ferdinand, then viceroy of Sicily. Ercole, living in Mantoue, was most active and stabilized the public purses, inter alia by supporting the creation of new town manufactures. Ercole ordered from Jules Romain the integral restoration of the interior of the cathedral ( il  duomo ); work was carried out by other artists because of died of the Romano occurred in 1546.

Charles Quint, again of passage to Mantoue in 1543, confirmed in François the nomination of duke of Mantoue and marquis de Montferrat and granted the hand of his Catherine niece to him.

François Maria thus, the October 22nd 1549 with Mantoue, with Catherine of Austria (1533-1572). She was the girl of Ferdinand I {{er}}, archduke of Austria, future Germanic emperor and of Anne of Bohemia; she was also the niece of Charles Quint. They did not have a child.

François III deceased in 1550, at almost 17 years, either drowned during one is beaten of hunting close to Mantoue, or of the continuations of a pneumonia contracted at the time of a fall in ice-cold water of a lake. The marriage with Catherine will have lasted only four months. Catherine, turned over in her fatherland, will marry, three years later, the king de Pologne Sigismond II Auguste.

Its successor will be his puîné brother, Guillaume.
