François Godefroy , born with Rouen in 1743 and died in Paris the April 28th 1819, is a engraver French.
Entered strong young person at the art school of Rouen directed by Descamps and of which it became one of the best pupils, François Godefroy went up to Paris to improve an art in which it showed of so happy provisions. Admitted, as of its arrival in the workshop of the famous Lebas engraver, it made, under this Master, of so fast progress in the exercise of the point and the graver.
Left this school, he undertook to engrave for his own account. The first which brought the reputation to him was its Repos of soldiers according to Loutherbourg, works soon followed by two landscapes according to Fragonard and of the Sheets of water according to the Prince which had a very great success among the amateurs. To these prints which reveal an engraver of first order, were added Géorgiennes to the bath of Hyre, the New Year's gifts , Vue perspective of the town of Rouen, catch of the Large-Course according to the original table of Hue, historical Spectacle engraved according to the medals of the cabinet of the king and that of Holy-Genevieve, Galerie of Florence according to the drawings of Wicar. It also enriches by some engravings the splendid collection of engravings of the Musée of Louvre. It carried out some subjects of great composition, according to Pillement, of the Vues mount Lebanon according to Caffe, of the portraits engraved with the graver with much taste and purity and the list of the deputies to the National Assembly of 1789 to 1790.
Godefroy was member of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Vienna, chair Athenaeum of Arts of Paris, Académie of Rouen and Free society of Emulation of Rouen. It left a son, Adrien Pierre François Godefroy (1777-1865) which was also acquired a brilliant reputation in arts.
