François-Gaston , duke of Lévis (August 20th 1719 close to Limoux - November 20th 1787 with Arras) is noble French and Marshal of France.

Biography

Junior by a noble family, he becomes member of a regiment of marine at the 14 years age.

News-France

Colonel in 1746, knight of Saint-Louis in 1748, it is named sergeant and second in command of the French Army to the Canada in 1756. Person in charge of the defense of the Lake Champlain until 1758, it supports Montcalm in the attack of the strong William Henry and the defense of the strong Chime. Fact brigadier, it takes part initially in the defense of Quebec in 1759 but is sent to deal with the defense of Montreal as from mid-August. Following the catch of Quebec on September 13rd, it takes the command of the armies after the death of Montcalm. In 1760, it goes on this city with the French Army and gains the Bataille of Holy-Foy, close to Quebec. It besieges the city but cannot take it again, the arrival of English reinforcements returning any attempt in this illusory direction. It is cut off from the Île Grey waxbill, close to Montreal, and burns the French flags at the time of the capitulation of 1760.

It is made general lieutenant on his return in France in 1761 and continuous illustrate himself in several battles in Europe. Governor of the Artois in 1766, governor of Arras in 1780, Marshal of France in 1783 then duke in 1784. He dies in Arras in 1787. Its widow and two of her three daughters are guillotinées in 1794

He is the father of Pierre-Marc-Gaston de Lévis, elected with the French Academy.
