François Gédéon Bailly de Monthion is a Major general First Empire born with Saint-Denis of the Réunion the January 27th 1776 and died in Paris the September 7th 1850, baron then Count of Empire. Large Cross of the Legion of honor, Knight of Saint-Louis, Large Cross about Hesse, Commander of the military Order of Wurtemberg, Knight about the Merit of Bavaria

It entered like Sous-lieutenant the 74e of line, the February 24th 1793. Was used for the Armies of the the Moselle and Northern . It left the service as noble officer, there returned soon in the capacity as Aide-de-camp of the general-in-chief of the Armée with the Eastern Pyrenees, and formed then part of the Armies of the Western, of Sambre-and-Meuse, Mayenne and Italy. It gained all its ranks there, until that of major to the 9th hunters with horse.

After the Battle Marengo, it was attached, with this rank, with the staff of the marshal Berthier, it accepted with Austerlitz the rank of Colonel, the cross of officer and that of the merit of Bavaria. It fills then of the diplomatic missions close to the courses of Bade, Hesse and Wurtemberg.

After the battles of Smolensk, Borodino, Malojaros-Lawitz and the passage of the Bérézina to which it assisted, it was named, the December 4th, Major general, and replaced Berthier like Major-general, after the departure of Napoleon.

The count de Monthyon was, in 1813, with Lutzen, Bautzen and in Wurtchen, the Major-general again August 24th until the end of October replaced, and was named large officer of the Légion of honor in November. In 1814, it made the countryside of France, accepted the cross of Saint-Louis to the First Restoration, made the countryside of 1815 in Belgium, as chief of the general staff, was wounded with Mount-Saint-Jean, and during the Second Restoration, was employed in the royal body staff.

Louis-Philippe did it Pair France, it is large Cord of the Légion of honor. The April 12th 1848, the Republic put it at the retirement.
