François Bourdoiseau , known as Without-Fear or the Small-Without-Fear (° December 13rd 1772 Brée -), was a chief Chouan of the Mayenne during the French revolution in the area of the Erve and the Charnie, particularly of Saint-Jean-on-Erve and Vaiges.
Towards the beginning of the summer 1794, it becomes one of the chouans main leaders in the area of Vaiges. It is present at the gathering convened by Jambe of Money to the wood of Saudraie to prepare the attack of the republican station of Astillé of the July 20th 1794. About August 1794, it meets in Jacques Bruneau of Mérousière known as “Mr Jacques” . Captain of the chouans of Saint-Jean-on-Erve, it is then instructed by Mr Jacques to spare an interview with to him Jambe of Money to the Château of Champfleury, so that it transfers his instructions to him (September 8th 1794).
He is present at the business of the pond of Ramée (September 28th - September 28th 1794), at the combat of Jupellière the October 28th 1794 and at the attack of Montsûrs conducted by Mr Jacques the December 12th 1794. He takes part in the combat of the wood of Montecler and the Vault-Rainsouin the January 6th 1795, where 22 chouans pushed back a battalion of the National guard come to attack them.
He appears to be himself then arranged under the authority of the Candlestick, chief of canton of the surroundings of Bazougers. The March 21st 1795, with Meslay, it signed with this last an address with the authorities of Laval by which it informed them that the royalists would not deliver grains as long as quarterings would not be raised.
Within the framework of the peace negotiations, it was one of the signatories of the payment of Bazougers, the May 7th 1795.
It took again the weapons with the rupture of the truce and took part, with the Candlestick, with the attack of a convoy, between Saint-Aignan and Genoa, in mid-September 1795. In this combat, it on the occasion to release its chief, the Candlestick, surrounded by the Blue ones.
In the winter 1795 - 1796, it operated in the division of Michel Jacquet says Taillefer. It subjected to pacification 1796 but was one of the first to take again the weapons, as of lépoque coup d'etat of the 18 fructidor (September 1797). It was then announced like working to relight the insurrection in the country of Saint-Jean-on-Erve.
In January 1799, it became one of the principal officers of Jean-Marie Mérille known as Beauregard , lately arrived in the country to order there. Saint-Jean-on-Erve having been occupied by the republican troops following the execution of a gendarme by the chouans in an inn of the borough, it signed with Mérille a proclamation which was posted in the village, where it appeared as chief of canton. It operated then around Évron with Beauregard . June 1st, it occupies Soulgé; the June 4th, it takes share with the combat of Saint-Jean-on-Erve delivered by Cyrille Jean Joseph Lavolvène, said Chevalier of Volvène. The July 5th, it disarms the Saint-Martin-of-Cone forging mill of Orthe to , operates then requisitions with Izé, Hambers, Jublains, Montourtier. In the summer 1799, it ordered in particular from men of Saint-Leger. The insurrection having become general, he became major and ordered the 2nd battalion of the 7th legion, said Vaiges, which counted 542 infantrymen and 24 cavaliers< according to a state of January 1800.
With the Restoration, he was sharecropper with Saint-Jean-on-Erve. Its military file carries that “it forever ceased electrifying the inhabitants; very brave man and excel prone. With very well done the war. Very good man. ” He took again the weapons with the Hundred Days, in 1815, as chief of the 2nd battalion of the 7th legion.
