François-Xavier Richter , also called František Xaver Richter or Franz Xaver Richter (born on February 1st 1709 in Holešov (Moravie); deceased the September 12th 1789 with Strasbourg) was a Moravian type-setter and an important representative of the “School of Mannheim”.

Biography

One knows few things of his youth and its origins are dubious; it probably accepted a complete musical education under the direction of Johann Joseph Fux with Vienna. Of 1740 until 1747 he was vice-Master of vault to the service of the prince-abbot Anselme de Reichlin-Meldegg with Kempten in the Allgäu, in Bavaria. During this time, six of its 69 Symphonie S were published in Paris. After 1747, as type-setter and Baritone, it belonged to the famous vault of court of Mannheim near the Prince-voter Charles-Theodore. Marpurg included it like second Violoniste in the orchestra of the court, but there are not other contemporary references to functions of instrumentalist whom it would have exerted. He wrote a treaty of composition, Harmonische Belehrungen oder gründliche Anweisung zu DER musikalischen Tone-Kunst oder regulären Komposition (ms ED., and transl. C. Kalkbrenner under the name of Traité of harmony and composition, Paris, 1804) and he undertook a certain number of rounds in concert, initially at the court of Oettingen-Wallerstein (1754) then, thereafter, in France, with the Netherlands and in England. In 1768 the voter appointed it type-setter of room; in 1769 it succeeded Joseph Garnier as Choirmaster of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame of Strasbourg where it had as assistant Ignace Pleyel, celebrates it pupil of Joseph Haydn.

In its works (see also: Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ars Rediviva), of the marks of the style baroque joins gallant elements. It belonged to these schoolmasters of Mannheim who had their importance for the beginnings of the symphony.

Among his pupils one knows Carl Stamitz, František Xaver Pokorný, Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-92) and Ferdinand Fraenzel.
