François-Joseph Navez
François-Joseph Navez (Charleroi, 1787 - Brussels, 1869) is a Belgian painter neo-classic.
Raise with Brussels of the painter Pierre-Joseph Célestin François, then to Paris, from 1813 to 1816, Jacques-Louis David, it spends then four years in Italy between 1817 and 1821. With his comrades Victor Schnetz and Léopold Robert, he invents the scene of kind to Italian the.
He excels in the art of the portrait, where he acquires his fame. He paints also many mythological and historical scenes.
He founds in 1810, with other traditional painters of reputation like Antoine Brice, Antoine Cardon or Charles Verhulst, a Company of the Art lovers.
Director of the royal Academy of the Art schools of Brussels of 1835 with 1862, it trains many artists, of which the orientalist Jean-François Portaels (his Gendre) like Alfred Stevens.
He is founding member of the royal Commission of the Monuments created in 1835.
A street bears its name to Schaerbeek and Charleroi.
