François-Joseph Fétis

François-Joseph Fétis is a musical Compositeur, critical and Belgian musicographe , born with Mons the March 25th 1784 and died with Brussels the March 26th 1871. He married Adélaïde Robert, girl of the revolutionist Pierre-François-Joseph Robert and Louise-Happiness of Kéralio, in Paris in 1806.

Biography

After its musical formation, initially with Mons then with the Conservatory of Paris, it obtained the second price with the contest of the Institute. It occupied then of the functions of teaching in the north of the France, in particular with Douai, before obtaining a station, in 1821, with the Conservatoire of Paris, to teach the Harmonie and the composition. Starting from 1826, it was there also Bibliothécaire.

After having written articles in other reviews, it decides in 1827 to create a musical Revue weekly, that it almost only directs and writes, accessible however the contributions of various authors. In front of the heaviness of this task, cumulated with that of director of Academy, it accepts in 1834 a bringing together with the musical Gazette of Paris to form the Revue and musical gazette of Paris under the direction of Maurice Schlesinger.

In 1832, it regained the Belgium, called by the king to direct new the royal Conservatoire of Brussels.

Fétis developed an important activity of historian of the music. In this field where there existed documents still relatively little, it published rather general books. He is the author of an important repertory of musicians, whom he wrote almost only also. This work, whose 2nd edition was produced in 1860, was reprinted in 2001 and still renders important services to the musicologists, in spite of the errors or the parties taken.

He was not a very noticed very fertile type-setter nor, and he is especially known for works in teaching matter, Instrumental music and sacred music.

Fétis yielded its personal Bibliothèque to the kingdom of Belgium: the “Fétis funds” is preserved at the royal Bibliothèque of Belgium, distributed between the sections Musique and invaluable Réserve .
