François-Joseph Bressani

François-Joseph Bressani (1612-1672) is a Jésuite and a missionary of the Canada.

Biography

Born with Rome, it enters the Society of Jesus at the 15 years age. 11 share for Canada in 1642, charged to inform French of Quebec. April 27th, 1644, it leaves the Three-Rivers for a new mission, that of the Huron , but is surprised by the Iroquois, which do it captive at some distance Three-Rivers, between the River-of-Wolf and Yamachiche. Brought captive in their country, it then endures there all the torments of the martyrdom, it is tiny room to slavery, before being sold with the Dutch for two hundred and fifty francs.

Become again free the next on August 19th, it embarks for France where it arrives on November 15th, and goes to Rome where it is received as an apostle by the pope Innocent X who asks by devotion to kiss the scars of the wounds that the missionary received for Jesus-Christ. It enables him to celebrate the mass, although the first phalanges of its fingers were burned, judging that which had been mutilated for the publication of the Gospel, was not to be private Saint-sacrifice.

The Bressani father comes to resume his apostolic work in Canada as of the year 1645. Of return in France in 1650, he dies in Florence on September 9th, 1672. Its shortened relation of News-France published in 1653, was translated from Italian and, published in 1852 by the Martin father.
