Framasoft

Framasoft is a Réseau of collaboratif Web sites with variable geometry whose common denominator is the Free software and its frame of mind. It aims at making known and to diffuse the free software with more many people.

Place of information, current events, exchanges and projects, Framasoft, from the diversity and the dynamism of its network, is today one of the French-speaking main doors of the free software. Its community accompanies those which wish to substitute their software owners by free software. It attaches a very detailed attention to the process of migration of the Operating system Microsoft Windows towards GNU/Linux.

Framasoft was created in November 2001 by Alexis Kauffmann, mathematics professor. The name derives from Framanet (for French and Mathematics in Intranet), educational project whose Framasoft initially was a software heading before becoming independent.

The Framasoft network

The Framasoft.org site is historically but also quantitatively the first of the sites of the network. He proposes Leitartikeces on the free software and of many tutoriels. But it is especially known for its vast directory of more than thousand free software categorized, presented, tested and with accompanying notes by the visitors.

The site rests technically on CMS SPIP and on a Wiki of work PmWiki.

Framakey

The Framakey project is a compilation of free software for Windows ready with employment on Clé USB which facilitates the life of the wandering users. The use of the software is done in a protected way and without leaving personal informations on the machines hosts on which you use your Framakey. The site as well proposes a complete package several free software to be downloaded and install of a blow on its key that the remote loading and the installation of individual free applications.

The site is pressed technically on the engine Wiki PmWiki.

Framabook

The Framabook project aims at creating a collection of free books on the free software. These books are sold on line by the editor In Libro Veritas but they are also proposed in their integral version in free remote loading on the site of the project. These books are qualified the free ones because they have licenses similar to those of the free software (license Creative Commons BY-SA and license Free Art). The model theoretically supports the diffusion of the free software and the collaborative modification of the works to quickly follow the new versions of the treated software, while making it possible to the author to draw benefit from their creation.

Two volumes are for the moment available: Use Thunderbird and Simple like Ubuntu .

The Forum

The forum of Framasoft (or Framagora) is a space of reception, discussions and exchanges around the free software. It helps the visitor to solve a problem involved in a particular free software and to find a free software precise meeting its needs. It accompanies it upstream in its will to discover Linux. He in general comments on the topicality of the free culture and the free software in particular. He was particularly active during the discussion on bill DADVSI. He also shelters the forums of sites partners like StopDRM, Candidats.fr, Eucd.info, Detaxe.org and VeniVidiLibri. The forum also plays the part of incubator of projects which they are interns (Framakey, Framabook…) or external (StopDRM, VeniVidiLibri…) since it is often in its center that the ideas are launched and first teams created.

Other sites

; Framablog Framablog.org is the Blog Framasoft network. It evokes the topicality of the free software as well in general as that of the Framasoft network in particular. He often proposes original translations of anglophone articles via the Framalang work group.

Framasoft association

Framasoft association was created in January 2004 subsequently to the site éponyme. It has as an aim the diffusion and the promotion of the free culture in general and the free software in particular.

In practice it represents Framasoft on the ground, deals with all the technical part of the network (domain names, waiters, installation and maintenance of the tools…), accompanies the projects and ensures themselves to give a coherence to the whole while guaranteeing the free character of all the resources created.
