Fraize

Fraize is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

Its inhabitants is called Fraxiniens.

Geography

Fraize is located in the high valley of the Meurthe. It is distant of 14 km the Saint-Dié-of-Vosges, of 19 km Gérardmer and 38 km Colmar by the collar of the Catch. Included in the Regional natural park of the Balloons of the Vosges, the city received the label of the Flowered Villes and Villages . Altitude varies there from 468 m to 1.131 m, maximum reached with the Rossberg , where the long valley of the Scarupt comes to address as tu the Alsace.

History

At the time of the division of the empire of Charlemagne, with the Treated of Verdun, the round of applause of Fraize belonged to the Lotharingie and finally of the Duché of Lorraine.

Named Frace at the 12th century, then Fracia or Fraice , the common car its name of Latin fraxinus , the ash, etymology which is found in the Gentilé Fraxinien .

In 1221, the duke Mathieu gave to Simon de Paroy the round of applause of Fraize. It divided it later with Anselme of Ribeaupierre. Henry de Ribeaupierre who had received the Hohennée of the duke Raoul stipulated that after its death the round of applause of Fraize is again a territory of the dukes of Lorraine. Henry de Ribeaupierre died in 1343 and as agreed the bench of Fraize turned over to the dukes. Before 1783, Plainfaing and its hamlets belonged to the commune of Fraize. It is only after this date that the two boroughs were set up in distinct communities.

Fraize was, until the 19th century, only one large very dispersed agricultural village, where the localities overrode the communal unit. Also the concern of defining armorial bearings was it late; the blazon of the town of Fraize is described as follows: gold to the band of azure charged with 3 buttoned pinks of the field, to 5 petals of the field and 5 petals of money .

  • Eugene Mathis (1864 - 1933), writer and poet, Price Erckmann-Chatrian 1925 and Prix Monthyon 1926 of the French Academy.
  • Originating in Fraize, the Chaxel family counted seven organ builders. Augustin was the only one to work in the Vosges.
    • Augustin Chaxel: born in Fraize in 1771, Augustin there Maria in 1809 and died in Anould in 1845. In 1817, it was announced like organ builder to Habeaurupt, meadows of Plainfaing. In 1821, it settled with the Cross-with-Mines where it built the organ of the churches of the Cross-with-Mines and Bertrimoutier.

Fraize is a chief town of canton of the the Vosges. The canton account 9 communes of a cumulated population of 11.506 inhabitants: Anould, Round of applause-on-Meurthe-Clefcy, the Cross-with-Mines, Between-two-Water, Fraize , Mandray, Plainfaing, Saint-Léonard and Valtin.

The commune is also the pole of the Communauté of communes of High Meurthe to which belongbelong Round of applause-on-Meurthe-Clefcy, Plainfaing and - since 2006 - Mandray.
