History

Rupert Murdoch establishes Fox News to occupy a niche of the information market which according to Murdoch is unoccupied: that of information right and balanced ( to fair and balanced ). According to Ken Auletta of the New Yorker, the goal was to offer a substitute to the media of information that Murdoch judged pledged with the democratic party.

News Corp had already a chain of information uninterrupted through its subsidiary company British Sky Broadcasting: Sky News, founded in 1989. Roger Ailes (ex-adviser in image of R. Nixon, R. Reagan and G.H.W. Bush), old of NBC accompanied by faithful was charged to assemble Fox News.

The chain innovates by a presentation very visual and coloured to attract the eye and to make it possible to the televiewers to include/understand the principal points even without following the emission. Text on the screen summarizes the points of view or fact share of the comments. Since the Attacks of September 11th, 2001, a flag of the United States appears in the corner high-left of the screen.

To accelerate its development, Fox News remunerated the operators of cable contrary to the practice but ran up against the operations of its competitors to draw aside it. Fox News having managed to be diffused with New York, Time Warner, owner of CNN, brought an legal action during which its owner of the time, Ted Turner compared Rupert Murdoch with Adolf Hitler while a newspaper belonging to him questioned the mental health of the first. Goes down for hearing

Fox News dominates the information market over the cable in front of its CNN rivals and MSNBC. CNN has 11  however; % of more than televiewers but those are less faithful to him and remain less longer in front of the programs of CNN, shorter than those of Fox News.

According to BBC, Fox News would have doubled its profit at the time of the last Iraqi conflict because of the patriotic cover of this last. The apogee of the conflict, the chain benefitted even from an increase in audience in 300  % with approximately 3,3  televiewer million per day.

The chain knows a disaffection today, having passed from 1,7 with 1,3  million spectators between 2005 and 2006. However, in July 2006, the emission, diffused by its competitors, best classified arrives only in 56e position, the 55 first coming from Fox News.

Criticisms

A statistical study based on adhesion with three ideas discussed concerning the war in Iraq at: 3334  televiewers of various chains was carried out by the Program one International Policy Attitudes during the winter 2003 - 2004. According to this one, 80  % of the televiewers of Fox News believe at least one of the three presented ideas, namely that:
  • the United States established an obvious bond between the mode of Saddam Hussein and the terrorist organization Al-Qaida (67  % for Fox News, 56  % for CBS, 49  % for NBC, 48  % for CNN, 45  % for ABC, 16  % for NPR and PBS).
  • on the question of the implication of Iraq in the Attentats of September 11th, that the Bush government affirmed forever, they are 33  % for CBS and only 24  % for Fox News;
  • the United States found weapons of massive destruction (33  % for Fox News, 23  % for CBS, 20  % for CNN and NBC, 19  % for ABC and 11  % for NPR and PBS);
  • the majority of the people in the world supported the release of the War in Iraq (35  % for Fox, 28  % for CBS, 27  % for ABC, 24  % for CNN, 20  % for NBC, 5  % for NPR and PBS).

This is why media less on the right like the NewYork Times and in France in at least an article of the Monde denounce its Slogan S Fair and Balanced (“Just and impartial”) and We Report, You Decide (“We pay, you decide”).

Outfoxed , assembly carried out by Robert Greenwald, affirms to have analyzed the operation of Fox News since the arrival of Rupert Murdoch. Since, journalists of Fox News like Bill O' Reilly and Eric Shawn denounced it: criticisms relate to amalgams and presentations which induce in error, as that of Frank O'Donnell which one had presented as “old producing of Fox News” whereas it was not directly employed by the chain, but worked for it via local chain WTTG.
