Fox-Amphoux ( Fouas in Of Provence) is a common French, located in the department of the Var and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Geography

Fox is composed of several villages and hamlets:
  • the Fox Old man is perched on a hill with 540m of altitude. It has a splendid panorama on the surrounding hamlets like on the mountains neighborhood (the Alps of the South, Bessillon…)

  • the hamlet of Bréguière is located in plain, it is a place of crossroads. One can find there the town hall, the post office and the elementary school.
  • the hamlet of Amphoux.
  • the Home of Fox.

History

  • As of the Bronze Age, the man installs his habitat inside caves which dominate the valley of the Bresque.
  • the rock of Fox was inhabited as of the Iron age by tribes celto-Ligurians. Excavations carried out in the plain, with the Home of Fox, gave off a vast Roman building of 4000m ² including/understanding a temple, thermal baths, a gantry and the vestiges of a theater. This site was occupied until IIIe century ap. J-C, then abandoned and again occupied in IVe and Ve century.
  • In edge of the one of the junctions of the Voie Aurélienne energy of Fréjus to Laugh, the Roman occupation developed in the plain; several sites testify some: Clastre, Jonquières, Cormeil and the Home.
  • " Fors" is quoted for the first time in 1097, in the cartulaire of Saint-Victor of Marseilles.
  • In 1235, Raimond Bérenger IV of Provence yields to of Blacas d' Aulps its rights on Tourtour and Fox-Amphoux against the seigniory of Séranon.
  • According to a contract gone back to 1233, Blacas had received by exchange of the count of Provence the doits of albergue of Fox and Amphoux. In 1239, Laure de Castellane, wife Blacas and their three sons concedes in Temphiers of the rights of pasture on the grounds of Aups, Moissac, Tourtour, Fabrègues, Fox and Amphoux.
  • In 1326, Fox-Amphoux counted 92 fires of queste. In 1471,21 " Larem foventes" , in 1518,83 houses. During the crises of bottom the Middle Ages, Fox lost the quarter of its population, but in the one half-century space this locality quadrupled its figure of 1471 and reconstituted in 1518 its population of the beginning of XIVe century.
  • Antoine of Albert of the Chain, prosecuting attorney at the Parliament of Provence in 1677, then president with mortar in 1694, acquired the ground of Fox which carried the title of baronnie. In its favor, it was set up in marquisat by letters patent of June 1719. His/her son Antoine, marquis de Fox after the death of his Dominique older brother, was the chief of squadron of the naval army of the king.

Midsummer's Day de Bresc

During the revolution, the hamlet of Midsummer's Day de Bresc was attached to the commune of Fox-Amphoux. Formerly possessions of Templiers, the seigniory of Midsummer's Day passed between the hands of the Ordre of Malta which dismembered it commandery of Puimoisson, on May 2nd, 1461, in favor of Guillaume d' Arbaud, coseignor of Aups. The descendants of this last sold it towards 1621 in Leuze, of Marseilles, which left it into 1697 in Savournin. Joseph-François de Gaudrini, baron de Fox-Amphoux, acquired in 1702 of it and alienated it on May 2nd, 1709, in favor of Jean-Baptiste de Sigaud, lawyer at the Parliament of Provence.

Personalities related to the commune

Paul Barras, conventional Republic was born in Fox-Amphoux on June 30th, 1755. It is deceased in Paris on January 30th, 1829. In 1780, it was aboard ship " Sardine" coming from the island Bourbon, when this one was failed the entry of the port of Marseilles. It is of this incident - the name of the ship having been deformed - which was born celebrates it tall story of the sardine which stopped the entry of the port.
In 1783, on board Credit, it was taken in a violent storm on the way of the Cape of Good Hope towards France and beseeched Notre-Dame de Bon Help to which the cave arranged in vault on the slopes of the hill of Fox-Amphoux is devoted. In 1794, it contributed to the fall of Robespierre and was member of the Directoire of 1795 to 1799.
