Foussemagne

Foussemagne is a common French, located in the department of the Territoire of Belfort and the area Franche-Comté.

Geography

The village of Foussemagne is located close to the Aéroparc , old aerodrome of Fountain transformed into park of industrial activity, on road RD 419 connecting Belfort to Altkirch. Located at 13 kilometers of Belfort, chief town of the department, its average altitude is of 350 Mr. His territory, covering 510 ha, is sprinkled by the river of Saint Nicolas's Day which takes its source close to Rougemont-the-Castle, in the solid mass of Vosges.

History

the Middle Ages until 1790, Foussemagne belonged to the stronghold of Montreux-Castle and became about it even the chief town as from the 16th century. Before being definitively attached to the France in 1648, the name of the village appeared in the documents compiled in German in the form Fuchsmeng . The vault Holy-Anne, founded at the end of the 17th century, was rebuilt with XIXe, the village depends on the parish of Fountain. At the beginning of the 19th century was built a synagog intended for the Jewish community, most important of the department since it comprised 132 people at that time cohabiting with 300 catholics. This characteristic is due partly to the lords of the place, the Reinach family, which supported their installation. June 30th 1815 the 8th Body of the general Lecourbe clashed with Austrian Fantassin S of the general count de Colloredo. The engagements made hundreds of dead and casualties. From 1871 with 1914, the German border passed in edge of the territory of the village.

Demography

The population was of 342 inhabitants in 1803. It is assembled to 553 in 1872 following the annexation of the Alsace by the German Empire. In 1999 it was of 607 inhabitants, which corresponds to one population density of 119 hab. /km ², value hardly higher than the national average.

  • Ludovic Oscar Frossard, a former minister of Leon Blum, historical founder of the French Communist party to the Congress of Turns and father of the academician André Frossard was born with Foussemagne on March 5th 1889.
