Fourthly or Fourthly! is a Board game combinative abstract with the turn by turn, created by Blaise Muller and published since 1991 by Gigamic.

It is about a play to the very simple concept and yet to the enormous possibilities.

Presentation

Contents of the play

The play consists of:
  • an apron of 16 boxes (4 X 4)
  • 16 differentiable pawns by 4 characteristics:
    • the color - clear wood/dark wood
    • the height - small/large
    • the top - full/perforated
    • the form - parallepipedic/cylindrical
All the combinations (example: large, clear, perforated and cylindrical wood) are represented, and each one is represented only once.

A turn of play

A turn of play consists in giving a pawn to the adversary which will have to place this pawn where good seems to him.

The goal of the play

In the basic rule, the goal of the play is to constitute a line of 4 pawns showing a common characteristic, and to announce it. However, if one plays systematically in a defensive way, the parts very often lead to null positions. Also, the rule envisages other configurations of profit, according to four levels of play.
  • the basic rule corresponds to the level one, the victory is obtained by carrying out an alignment.
  • the level two makes it possible to gain by carrying out an alignment or a small square (for example, boxes a1, a2, b1 and b2).
  • the level three, in addition to the positions of profit of level 2 makes it possible to carry it by carrying out a larger square (for example on the boxes a1, a3, c1 and c3.)
  • the fourth level, taking again the position of profit of the level three adds the squares " to it; tournants" , namely for example the boxes a2, b1, b3 and c2, or, even more difficult to see, the boxes a2, b4, d3 and c1.

The play, on this level, almost entirely eliminates the parts with equality. Moreover, the existence of these various levels of play makes it possible to introduce a handicap, the two players not playing on same level and not having thus same the diagrams of profit.
