The fourth Internationale was founded in 1938 in France by Leon Trotsky, following the violent exclusion of the communist Opposition of the IIIe Internationale, with the repression which fell down on the opponents in the USSR, vis-a-vis the report which it was impossible to militate in the communist movement from now on locked by the Stalinist bureaucracy.
The fourth International one underwent several scissions during its history, the first in 1940 (in France exclusively), and the principal one in 1953 (with the international plan). In spite of a partial reunification in 1963, several international regroupings claim the fourth International one and heritage Trotskiste. There to date exists a score of international organizations, of size various.
The Secrétariat Unified of the Fourth International one is presented in the form of only the Fourth International one legitimates, in the facts it is largest in term of militants and countries covered by its sections. Certain tendencies, as that to which belongs Workers' struggle, estimate that the Fourth International one does not exist any more in fact, and that it should be rebuilt. Some estimate that it built forever, and that it is thus simply to build. Other groups call with the creation of fifth International.
Many scissions took place in IVe Internationale:
in 1939 (in France exclusively), the communist internationalist, more known Union today in France by the name of its newspaper, Workers' struggle, and by its spokesperson, Arlette Laguiller: accent on the need for a party independent of the working class, and the need for the militants trotskystes for militating in direction of the workers of the row (this organization does not have almost any audience apart from France);
in 1952, scission of the Communist party internationalist (NCV), which will have many repercussions on the level of International as of 1953, between:
the Secretariat Unified of Pablo, Mandel, Frank. In France this tendency was represented by the Communist party internationalist (Unified Secretariat), then by the communist Ligue of 1969 with 1973, and finally since 1973 by the Communist revolutionary league. Since the Years 1990, the 4th International one (unified Secretariat) continues its historical combat in the middle of the new forms of militance: near the insurrectionists of the Chiapas, strikers of the social movement of the winter 1995, movement Altermondialiste until its combative participation against liberal Europe, at the time of the referendum in France which saw triumphing the victory over the " Non".
