Fournes-Cabardès

Fournes-Cabardès is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Fournois.

History

The commune is occupied as of the Préhistoire such that the Menhir S attest it and Dolmen S as the will peyra plantada . The creation of the village goes back to the Antiquité with mining. During three centuries, the men extracted approximately 200  000 tons of ore of Iron. The mines also produced Cuivre and Argent. The name of Fournes comes from the furnaces of the ancient or medieval founders.

In 1101, the villa of Fornes belongs to the seigniory of Cabardès, then of the royal châtellenie with Salsigne, Lastours, Ilhes, Villanière and Limousis. In 1260, a castrum is present on the commune. At the 14th century, one cultivates there the Vigne and the Orge. The tisserands and the breeding of sheep are very present until the 20th century.
