Fourmies

Fourmies is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Its inhabitants is called Fourmisiens.

Geography

Fourmies is in the Thiérache, to about fifty Valencian kilometers of , to a hundred kilometers of Lille, to 175 km of Paris. The city is surrounded by Forêt S and pond S.

History

May 1st 1891: Shooting of Fourmies, first French and international celebration of the day of action of May 1st. In Fourmies (Northern) the troop shoots at the peaceful strikers: nine died, including 8 demonstrators of less than 21 years, among which a young worker who will remain like a symbol, Marie Blondeau, and 35 wounded.

The shooting of May 1st with Fourmies causes a sharp emotion in whole France. She is regarded today as one of the events founders of the labor movement. Jean Jaurès will go even shortly after to Fourmies to make a speech there while Georges Clémenceau will declare in front of the Député S that “it is the Fourth state which rose”.

For Edouard Drumont, the Jews are at the origin of these exactions: “ the Jewish sub-prefect Isaac, wire of one naturalized of Crémieux, made test Lebel on French workmen. Those which always love you hope that it is you who will pronounce the avenger words to fade the assassin. The prefect Vel-During is Jewish also, they are all Jewish in it. ” (quoted by Michel Winock, 1982, Nationalism, anti-semitism and Fascism in France. Points Threshold, coll History).
