Fouras is a common French, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime and the area Poitou-Charentes at 34 km at the south of La Rochelle.

Geography

Fouras is located on a Presqu'île. It is bordered by five Plage S, a main forest named the Green heart covers 1/5 of its surface.

It is prolonged in a roadway discovering with low Marée towards the Fort Énet, in direction of the island of Aix. The landing stage towards the island of Aix east located besides on the territory of the commune.

The southern part of the Presqu'île of Fouras forms the northern side of the mouth of the Fleuve Charente. A little more in the south is the island of Oléron. With broad between the island of Aix and the island of Oléron the Fort Boyard is, made famous for the emission of the same name: the Fouras father is not for nothing in the celebrity Fouras.

History

With broad was held the naval battle of the Scathing attacks, made famous for a table of Fouqueray, battles delivered by the English whereas they wanted to reach the arsenal of Rochefort.

In addition, Napoleon left in Fouras the ground of the metropolis on the shoulders of the Beau sailor to the place says “southern beach”, before embarking on the Salle frigate and leaving towards the island Aix, then Sainte-Hélène.

Become Seaside resort in 1850, the vogue of the sea bathings of the 19th century contributed to make of Fouras, an important center tourist. In 1866 were created the Régates of Fouras and in 1869 a circle of play to the castle of the Green heart

Strong Énet

Strong Énet was built under Napoleon between 1801 and 1811, it took part in the protection of the roads of Rochefort. It was used nevertheless especially as prison of transit to the convicts.

Strong Vauban or semaphore

Called rather semaphore because of its old role of transmitter of signals to the Ship S, they is oldest extremely of the city. Located at the seaside between the western beach and the southern beach, it consists of a Donjon and Rempart S with ditches.

Its origin is not very known. Some think that a Roman temple was built there at the beginning of our era. The square keep dates from the 15th century, the ramparts are more recent and were preceded by an enclosure of garrison on the current carpark.
