Fountain of Trevi
The fountain of Trevi ( fontana di Trevi ) is one of the most famous monuments of Rome. Ordered from Niccolò Salvi in 1732 to replace the modest basin installed at this place by Nicolas V, the fountain of Trevi was completed in 1762 by Niccolo Pannini. Leant with the Polished palazzo, this monumental work in form of Triumphal arch, crushes the tiny place on which it is.
The origin of its name can be legendary, according to the tastes of each one: thus, some affirm that it was named Trevi because of the low-reliefs of the fountain, in reference to the legend according to which called “a Trevi” would have saved its Virginité by indicating the site of this source. But the most accepted etymology, less poetic but more probable is Latin E: trivium ( tre life in Italian), meaning “three streets”, and Trevi is precisely the name of the rione (administrative sector, in several Italian cities) where throne this fountain monumental, par excellence go in love ones and couples wishing a child.
The fountain of Trevi is an example of the perpetuation of the style baroque in Rome of the 18th century, from its mixture of the effects (she exploits at the same time architecture, the sculpture and the sound), its monumentality (she is structured by four columns of colossal Ordre) and its reference to the fountain of Piazza Navone by Bernin. The unit is overcome blazon of the pope Clément XII, as well as four satues under the balustrade representing the four seasons. The principal niche shelters the god Océan, sculpture of Pietro Bracci; it is surrounded by abundance and healthiness, works of Filippo della Valle, a Florentin sculptor; these two rounds bumps themselves being surmounted by two reliefs representing on a side the young girl discovering the source (by Grown bigger) and other, the Roman Emperor Clutched ordering the construction of the aqueduct (by Andrea Bergondi). The tank of Ocean is drawn by sea horses themselves preceded by tritons. One of the horses is peaceful while the other seems agitated, in order to symbolize the two aspects that peuvet to offer the sea to us.
Anecdote
It is of habit to throw a coin while turning the back on the fountain before leaving Rome, a superstition associated with the fountain being that which makes this gesture is ensured to return to Rome in order to find this part. However, the currency of this fountain is collected by the authorities and is sent to charity works. Not question of entering water to subtilize some coins, because the police officers take care of the grain. In summer, the fountain of Trévi is made roughly once empty its currency per week.
