Fountain-the-Mallet is a common French, located in the department of the Seine-Maritime and the area High-Normandy.
Its inhabitants is called Fontainais.
The commune bordering are Octeville-sur-Mer and Montivilliers.
Fontenes or pig iron and cast iron which means in Latin “fountain” or “ source” is at the origin of the name of this commune, which appears plausible because many sources emergent of the ground.
Holy Valéry, at the beginning of the 7th century would have baptized of the converted villagers. The parish church names Saint Valléry-the-sources, according to a decree declared under the Terreur. In a register of the secretariat of the archbishop's palace of Rouen, going back to 1479-1480, one can read “ Parochia de Fontibus the mallet ”, which means “parish of Fountains Mallet”. Why Mallet? This is undoubtedly due to the presence of the first lords: Malet de Graville about 1200-1300. Guillaume Malet gave to the monks priory of Graville Sainte Honorine the patronage of certain churches of which that of Saint-Valéry-of-Fountain. You could raise of the modifications of the orthography: Fountain should be written Fontaines. Same manner, Mallet takes 2 '' L '', to perhaps differentiate the patronymic name from that of the stronghold.
Fountain-the-Mallet increases during the centuries. Completely destroyed by the bombardments of September 1944 the city was rebuilt in the years 1960.
