Platée is a Comic opera of Jean-Philippe Rameau, qualified Ballet buffoon with his creation, on March 31st 1745 with Versailles.

Work is composed of a prolog and of three acts, on a booklet drawn from jealous Platée or Junon , of the playwright Jacques Autreau, inspired of the Béotiques , IXe delivers, chapter III, of the Description of Greece , the Greek geographer-historian Pausanias.

Branch had bought the rights of this work, and required of the man of letters Adrien-Joseph Valois d' Orville and of Ballot of Sauvot to reinforce the comic aspect with it.

It is the most popular opera of Branch with the gallant Indies . Seldom the orchestra ramellien will have been more tempting, the rates/rhythms more inventive than in this cruel but very funny history placed under the sign of the Madness of an ugly girl who believes himself irresistible.

Work

Prolog

With the kingdom of Bacchus, inventive Thespis of the Comédie is awaked by the Satires, Ménades and other vintagers. He resigns himself to provide a new entertainment but without sparing anybody. Thalie, Momus and the Love lends their contest to the subject: comic loves of Jupiter.

Act I

With the foot of the Cithéron mount, in the middle of the unchained elements, Cithéron deplores (“Gods, who hold the universe in your hands”) but here are that Mercure goes down from the skies in the hope to cure Junon its jealousy. Cithéron suggests that Jupiter pretends the love for the ridiculous nymph and batracian who reigns on the marsh and magic Mercure of the idea goes back to the sky. Grotesque Foundation appears, seeking which could comfort it its loneliness (“That this stay is pleasant”), accompanied by the croaking by frogs and the song by the cuckoos. Alas, Cithéron tests for it only… respect. Is the nymph indignant (“thus Say, thus say why? ”) supported by the chorus which coasse (“What? What? ”) but the Mercury arrival puts an end to the tumult. The Master of the thunder fell under the charm from the goddess who reigns in these superb marshes. Moreover, time is covered, proof of the jealousy of Junon: the act is completed on a dazzling sequence of dances and airs stopped by an orchestral storm of most frantic.

Act II

Mercury warned Junon which prepares its revenge. Jupiter finally condescends to go down from the skies (“North winds too daring”) and with the sight of the divine cloud, Platée is disturbed (“With the aspect of this cloud”). Here is that the god metamorphoses himself in the best mythological tradition. He becomes initially a quadruped which inspires with the orchestra the various braiements then “most beautiful of the owls” before flying away. Jupiter returns in its true form: “Would you Be insensitive to my tender wishes? ”. It what the nymph answers: “Ouffe”! The god convenes Momus and orders an entertainment. The chorus makes fun of the elected news (“Which it is comic! How it is beautiful! ”). But here the Madness which has just concealed the quadrant of Apollo. It tells the history of Daphné and Apollon in a delirious air with Italian (“With languors of Apollo, Daphné refused”), then very beautiful minuets in tastes out of hurdy-gurdy , i.e. by imitating this pastoral instrument, are made hear, they are the moment most famous of the partition. All sing then the Junon news (“He, good, good, good”).

Act III

Junon is in rage (“Hatred, spite, jealous rage”) in spite of the Mercury efforts to calm it. Foundation claims Hymen and the Love but Momus to delay the ceremony multiplies the entertainments. False Grâces then of merry peasants comes to dance (“Foundation, brighten you Sing”) with the great impatience of the nymph. Jupiter is finally constrained to swear its faith: what fact-therefore Junon? It emerges finally, ready to make a bad fate with its rival and bursts of laughing by tearing off the veil of Foundation: “That I see! O sky! ” and Jupiter to answer: “you see your error”. The two husbands reconciled on the back of unfortunate go back to the skies. Furious but impotent foundation must flee under the gibes of the chorus.
