Foulque of Mascareignes
The foulque of Mascareignes ( Fulica newtoni ) is one of Oiseau Gruiforme of Rallidé S formerly endemic of the Mascareignes and now disappeared.
With the Meeting, its existence is attested by many accounts of travellers and the discoveries of more recent Os. The last account which mentions it in this island is that of Dubois in 1672.
One can only suppose that the bird also met with the Mauritius while basing itself on the descriptions made by the witnesses of “ similar hens of water ”. François Leguat is the last to speak in 1693 about it.
Even if its flesh were obviously unpleasant to the palate, it is thought that it is the Chasse which is at the origin of the disappearance of this bird which lived the littoral ponds .
