Foulque Ier ( ou' Fulco ) of Anjou' , known as the Russet-red is the first count d' Anjou of 930 with 942, having initially been Viscount of Angers (before 898-930) and of Turns (898-909), and count de Nantes (909-919). It is of the family of the Ingelgeriens and wire of the Viscount Ingelger and perhaps of Aelendis.

It is quoted for the first time in a charter of April 886, then like Viscount in another charter of September 29th, 898, signed by the Viscount Hardrad de Tours. Another charter of 909 also says it Viscount of Turns . In 909, following the death of Alain Large the, the Viscount of Turns is given to Thibaud Old the and it receives the Comté of Nantes, charged with fighting against the Normands and the Bretons. Nantes is taken by the Norman ones in 914, and Foulque gives up its rights on the county of Nantes in 919. It will preserve the title of count however, but this title was definitively recognized only in 930, when its suzerain Hugues Large the qualified it like such in one of his charters. It passed most of its life to fight the Vikings.

He had married Roscille, girl of Garnier ( Warnerius ), lord of Loaches, and Tescende, and had had:

  • Ingelger, died before 929 and probably killed into 927 during an engagement against the Vikings.
  • GUI ( Widdo ), canon of Saint-Martin-of-Turns, then bishop of Soissons of 937 with 973
  • Foulque II the Good, count d' Anjou.
  • Roscille of Anjou, married to Alain II Barbetorte, duke of Brittany. they will have a Gerberge girl of Nantes.

It is quoted with his son Foulque II for the last time in August 941. A charter of May 942 quotes Foulque count d' Anjou, without it being known if it is of Foulque Ier or Foulque II. Taking into account the fact that Foulques Ier began its career towards 886, he probably died shortly after 941.

Foulques the Russet-red one is quoted in " the Chronicle of the exploits of the Counts d' Anjou" , text written of 1100 to 1140 by a monk angevin, at the request of Foulques Réchin.
