Foulque II (ou' Fulco ) of Anjou' ( the Good ), was count d' Anjou in Xesiècle, count de Nantes and duke of Brittany between 958 and 960. It was of the family of the Ingelgeriens and wire of Foulque I {{er}} '' the Russet-red '' and of Roscille of Loches.
Biography
Its life
It is quoted for the first time in a charter of his father of
929, with his mother and her Guy brother. He is still signatory of a charter of his father in August
941, and it is probable that it succeeded to him little of time afterwards. Combined to the
Robertiens, he is rather opposed to the counts de Blois, but the death of Alain II Barbetorte, duke of Brittany in
952, redistributes alliances. Foulque II marries the widow of Alain Barbetorte, and takes the control of the county of Nantes in the name of Drogon, the son of Barbetorte. This one died in
958 under badly definite conditions. Foulque II of Anjou became count de Nantes until in
960, Date to which Hoël Ier wire of Alain Barbetorte and a second marriage, became in its turn count de Nantes.
It yielded to Saumur to the count of Blois Thibaut the Cheater, quoted that its successors succeeded in beginning again only nearly one century later. It took Méron, with Guillaume III, count de Poitiers.
In spite of certain misdeeds which are allotted to him, it in addition leaves the memory of a cultivated prince, poet and artist. It is quoted for the last time in September 958, at the time of one assembled gathering the counts of Blois, Anjou and the Breton lords. At the time of this assembly, Foulque II becomes count de Nantes and even duke of Brittany. In September 960, it is his/her Geoffroy son who is quoted as count d' Anjou. He thus died between these two dates.
Foulque the Good is quoted in the Chronique exploits of the Counts d' Anjou , text written between 1100 and 1140 by a monk angevin, at the request of Foulque Réchin.
Marriages and children
In
937, he married in first Gerberge weddings, deceased before
952. No document mentions its origin. An assumption regards it as a girl of Ratburn Ier, Viscount of Vienna, and Gerberge. Ratburn was itself wire of Berillo, Viscount of Vienna, and Ermengearde, girl of
Boson, king de Provence. This assumption is based on the appearance of the first names Gerberge and Ermengarde among the
Ingelgeriens and on the good relationships between Anjou and Burgundy at that time. This last argument is not of it is a proof, but only one index, and the appearance of the first name of Ermengarde can is explained differently. The only argument remaining in favor of this assumption is the first name of Gerberge, which is however too current to be exploitable. Another assumption gives it like girl of Geoffroy, Viscount of Orleans and Ada. This second assumption with the advantage of explaining the appearance of the Geoffroy first name among the counts of Anjou, as well as the transmission of the county of Gâtinais.
Foulque and Gerberge gave rise to:
- Geoffroy Ier Grisegonel († 987), count d' Anjou.
- Guy († 994) bishop of the Puy-en-Velay.
- Adelaide of Anjou (945-50 † 1010 or 1026), known as White , married several times:
- # in 967 with Etienne de Brioude, Viscount of Gévaudan
- # towards 975 with Raymond (V) († 978), count de Toulouse
- # in 982 Louis V († 987), king de France, but it very quickly separated
- # in 984 Guillaume I {{er}} († 993), count de Provence.
- probably Adele, married to Gautier I {{er}}, count de Vexin, of Valois and of Amiens. The identification of this Adele as girl of Foulques II is justified by the appearance of the first names of Foulques, Geoffroy and Guy among wire of Gautier and Adele.
Other children were allotted to them by error:
- Dreux or Drogon which would have been bishop of the Puy after his/her brother, but the list of the bishops of Puy does not mention a bishop of this first name at the 10th century, and its presence in the genealogies probably results from a confusion with Drogon of Brittany, wire of Roscille of Blois and Alain Barbetorte and son-in-law of Foulque II when this last marries Roscille of Blois widow of Alain Barbetorte.
- Humbert the Huntsman, quoted by Mabille in 1871, but whose existence is not pressed on any document
- Bouchard Worthy the († 1007), count de Vendôme, also quoted by Mabille in 1871, but its filiation was established since.
Widower, Foulque remaria in 954 with Roscille of Blois, widow of Alain II Barbetorte, duke of Brittany and count de Nantes, which widowed was sister of Thibaut I {{er}} the Cheater, count de Blois
