Fouga Magister

The Aerospace - Potez - Fouga CM170 Magister is a Jet initially intended for the military pilot training. Recognizable with its back Empennage in " V" (known as " papillon"), it was manufactured to a thousand of specimens and used by ten country.

History

The Fouga Magister was conceived with the whole beginning of the year 1950, to answer a request of the French Air force. Two prototypes were constructed: the first with the empennage in " V" and the second with a traditional empennage. In spite of the crash landing of the prototype in " V" , this aerodynamic formula was retained for the specimens of series. The production starts in 1953, Air force having ordered 5 planes of preproduction and 95 of series.

In 1954, the Fouga Magister is retained by NATO like jet of basic drive. The orders flow then of several countries, and a production under license is launched in Germany, Israel and Finland. On the whole, 929 specimens will be built, of which some are always in service 50 years later.

A modified version was developed in 1954: the CM175 Zéphir , which made its first flight in on July 31st, 1956. It is equipped with a stick of landing, a sliding canopy and a reinforced landing gear, in order to train the pilots of the Aéronavale to the landing and takeoff since a Porte-avions.

Thanks to its capacities, the Fouga Magister was adopted like plane of stunt-flying of several lifting Patrouilles, of which famous the Patrouille of France which used it during 16 years.
