The forwardings of the State independent of Congo towards the Nile are a whole of forwardings carried out by the State independent of Congo (EIC) in the Années 1890 to establish a head of bridge on the the Nile (current territory Sudan be born). They ended with the session then the difficult occupation of the Enclave of Redjaf, and the end of the Crise of Fachoda between the France and the the United Kingdom.

Rétroactes

The Madhistes had taken Khartoum and massacred the Général Gordon the January 26th 1885. Those had then gradually pushed incursions towards the south, until penetrating in the valley of the Uele in 1891, in the north of the territory of the State independent of Congo.

Henry Morton Stanley had first once the occasion to face them at the time of the Expédition of help in Emin Pasha of 1886 with 1889.

Forwarding Van Kerckhoven

Léopold II of Belgium chooses the captain Guillaume Van Kerkhoven to carry out a forwarding in the north-eastern borders of the EIC and to invest Bahr-el-Ghazal. Pierre Ponthier, ordering the avant-garde, occupied Djabbir then attacked and dismantled the October 27th 1891 a camp madhist established between the Bomokandi and Uele. Other agents of the EIC occupied the sultanates of the north of the territory: Mîlz at the Semio sultan, of Kethule at Rafaiï and Foulon at Sessa.

Guillaume Van Kerkhoven, to the head of large of forwarding, crossed Uele and founded Amadi, Surongo, Niangara. He reached the Nile with Wadelaï. He was killed accidentally in 1893 by a shooting of one of his soldiers.

A forwarding directed by Nilis passed the Bomu and approached Bahr-el-Ghazal, where it had to deliver combat against Madhistes. Hanolet forwarding penetrated in the Chari. Forwarding Donckier de Donceel reached Liffi. France however protested and the EIC had to limit its border to Bomu.

Chaltin forwarding

Madhistes however took again their incursions towards the south. They were beaten in 1894, around the strengthened station of Dungu.

It is at that time that was concluded with the the United Kingdom, with the catches with the French rebellion mahdist and incursions, a lease on the Enclave of Lado, confirming the occupation of Dufile and Redjaf by the EIC.

In 1895, Louis Napoleon Chaltin, which had just gained victory over Arabo-Swahilis with Riba Riba then with the Stanley Falls rendi with Dungu to attack the sultans Mbili and Ndoruma. It had to face 3.000 warriors Azande, but gained the victory however.

A forwarding of importance towards the enclave of Lado was entrusted to him. Started from Dungu at the end of 1896 with 7 other white officers, 700 soldiers, 500 auxiliaries and a gun, it reached the Nile after 50 days of walk, and victoriously faced 1.500 warriors madhist with Redjaf the February 14th 1897. The command of the place was entrusted to Leon Hanolet.

Chaltin forwarding was to parallel to act a more important column ordered by Francis Dhanis, including/understanding 5.000 men, and who was to cross the Forêt of Aruwimi in direction of the enclave of Lado. The soldiers were for the majority the old slave ones or batetela, of which some had revolted one year earlier with Luluabourg.

Avant-garde of Dhanis, ordered by Leroy, and its three battalions of 1.000 men each one, ordered by the captains Mathieu, Julien and Doorme, left the Stanley Falls in September 1896. Arrived the February 14th 1897 at the village of Dirfi, close to Dungu, this one revolted, the very same day where Chaltin reached the Nile. Ten officers and warrant officers, whose Leroy, were killed.

Principal forwarding could not be concluded, and Dhanis fought the rebellion during more than two years until the Kivu and to the Maniema.

Control of the Nile

In 1898, the station of Redjaf had to face a night attack of the madhist. It could be pushed back.

Hanolet then made come item by item from Léopoldville a steamer (Steamer) of 20 tons. He was baptized " Van Kerckhoven" , and allowed Josué Henry to take possession of the river to the length of the enclave until Fachoda, while Hanolet and Renier reinforced the fortified positions.
