Fortis

Fortis (,) is an integrated financial group (banks and insurances) based in Belgium and with the Netherlands.

Because of its geographical base and of its basic trade which is the bank of detail, the group is the number one (2005) in the banking services with the private individuals in Belgium.

Since 2005 and the designation of Jean-Paul Votron like CEO, the group follow a policy of voluntarist internationalization with a double objective: to increase the earning per share of at least of 10  % per annum on average during the period 2005-2009, and to carry to 30  % in 2009 the share of the benefit generated except the Benelux countries (15  % in 2004).

History

Fortis is born in 1990 from integration from the insurance company AMEV (Netherlands), AG Group (Belgium) and the bank VSB (Netherlands).

During Years 1990, the group acquires of the Belgian bancassuror CGER (acronym of general Caisse of saving and retirement ) between 1993 (50  %) and 1997 (100  %), of the Credit to Industry in 1995, of MeesPierson in 1997 and the General of Bank in 1999.

In 1999, the companies of the group are amalgamated in two poles (banks and insurances), the Fortis action being with dimensions as well out of purse of Amsterdam as of Brussels.

The 8 October a 2007 consortium of 3 European Banks, Royal Bank off Scotland Group, Fortis and Banco Santander, announced the acquisition of ABN AMRO.

In November 2007, the group of insurance Chinese Ping' year announces an acquisition of a holding in the shareholding of the group to a total value of approximately 4%.

Trades

Retail Banking

Retail Banking proposes finance departments with the private individuals and the small companies. The trade has six million customers to the Benelux and in Turkey, and is also present in France, in Suisse, Germany and Poland where it concentrates on the credit cards and the consumer credit.

Merchant & Private Banking

Merchant & Private Banking are addressed to the large and average companies, to the contractors, to the institutional customers and to the private customers of the higher segment of the financial solutions and of investment adapted to their needs. Merchant Banking associates the leadership of the market with the Benelux with a strong European and international position in the fields such as the structured appropriations and the maritime sector, the raw materials and the financing of projects.

Insurance

Gather Insurance Belgium and Insurance Netherlands which is among signal 10 of the European insurers and are insurers general practitioners (broad range of insurances life, not-life as well as mortage products and products of saving), and Insurance International , established in selected markets of Europe and Asia.
