Fortaleza (“Fortress” in Portuguese) is the fourth city of Brazil.
It is located in the State of the Ceará in the area of Nordeste, to 2285 km of Brasilia. Fortaleza is a modern city with on the littoral of large buildings of recent construction.
Fortaleza is an economic heart of the area with in particular industries mine, textile, leather, agriculture (Cashew nut) and especially tourist.
Tourist city with its beaches and its splendid littoral as well as the proximity of Beach Park (20 km), the largest park of leisure of the South America.
The beaches of the surroundings are absolutely paradisiac. One will distinguish however those from the East (Cumbuco), where sand is white. Those of the west (Praia of the Pig iron and cast iron, Morro Branco, Canoa Quebrada) where the littoral is typical with sand cliffs of 8 different colors.
The city is equipped with an International airport (FOR - Pinto Martins) in particular connected to the Europe by direct flights with Lisbon (Portugal) and Milan (Italy) as well as many interior flights for Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, etc.
The construction of two underground lines is currently in hand. (December 2003)
Lastly, the Industrial Port of Mucuripe whose annual traffic is 30 million tons, can accommodate ships of 50.000 tons.
The principal monuments are the Arts center Dragão C Mar (30000 m ² dedicated to Art and Culture), the theater Jose Martiniano de Alencar (1910) and restored in 1991, the Metropolitan Cathedral (Jorge Maunier, Architecte French), the statue of Iracema, the fort of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (1649), the center of Conservation of the Railway History of the Ceará, the Historical and Anthropological Museum of Ceará.
