Forsmark is a village of 59 inhabitants located on the east coast of the Uppland, to 150 km of Stockholm, in Sweden. This small village is famous because of the Nuclear plant of Forsmark and the center of storage of Radioactive waste, called SFR Forsmark, located at 60 meters of depth under the Baltic.
Thanks to the sensors of radioactivity located in the Nuclear plant to detect the local escapes, Forsmark was, the April 27th 1986, the first site apart from the Soviet Union where the consequences of the Catastrophe of Tchernobyl became apparent. When workers of the power station who transported radioactive particles were detected, the origin of the escape was examined and it appeared that the contamination came from the atmosphere rather than of the power station of Forsmark.
July 26th, 2006, a Nuclear accident, qualified “the very serious one” by the Swedish organization of the inspection of nuclear safety (SKI), occurred with the Nuclear plant of Forsmark.
