Former notched muscle

The former muscle notched ( Seratus anterior ) more commonly called in French large muscle notched is a muscle of the thoracic wall but also of the shoulder. It is composed of three parallel beams. It bears also the name of muscle costo-scapular of Chaussie .

Insertions and way

The origin of the former muscle notched distributed on the former face of the Scapula. Insertion forms on a thin tape widened at these ends and skirting all the height of the edge médial (or spinal) of the Omoplate.

The fibers of the muscle follow a way directed of inside towards the outside, the top to the bottom and of the back forwards circumventing of back ahead the side face of the wall of the Rib cage, separated from this one by the sérato-thoracic Syssarcose and separated behind from the scapula by the Syssarcose sérato-scapular.

It ends in insertions in the form of digitations (or serrations) on the coasts:

  • the higher beam finishes on the side faces of the 1 and 2nd coasts;
  • the average beam finishes on the side faces of 2nd at 4th coasts;
  • the lower beam finishes on the side faces of 5th at 9th coasts (sometimes 10th).
'

It allows the lowering and the antépulsion of the shoulder thus creating the requirements the abduction of the arm since during the transfer of the belt scapular, it involves the rise in the glene humérale. When the scapula is fixed, it is inspiring accessory. It is also stabilizing scapula and makes it possible to bring it closer to the thorax.

This muscle develops particularly at the time of the exercises of pumps .

Pathology and former notched muscle

A fracture of the point of the scapula related to the respiratory action of the former muscle notched at the time of cough was described in 2003.

Surgical use

Scraps musculocutanés of notched former can be used in plastic surgeon.
