The former Macedonian is one of the Hellenic languages Indo-European. It was the spoken language in the Antiquité with the Royaume of Macedonia (today Greek Macedonia in the north of the Greece) and in the historical area of the Macedonia. Few texts survived in this language, and consequently its classification is difficult. Following classifications were proposed:

  • a language sister of the old Greek pertaining to a group called gréco-Macedonian;
  • a Greek dialect near with the Dorien;
  • a language belonging to the Balkan group.

The publication of the text of a defixio amatoria found with Peeled, the longest inscription known in this language, nevertheless made it possible to make progress the debate, on the one hand by showing that the Macedonian was well a Greek dialect, and on the other hand by showing its proximity at the same time Thessalien and dialects of the North-West.

For the Slavic language spoken today in Republic about Macedonia (ARYM) to see Slavic Macedonian.
