Format sixteen ninth

The sixteen ninth - 16/9 - (either a report/ratio of 1,78:1 between width and height of the screen) is the format retained for the majority of recent televisions, like for TVHD. It corresponds to a Format of screen broader than traditional the 4/3 (1,33:1 report/ratio), thus making it possible to have a representation of work “broad” Formats of projection Cinéma tographic (generally 1,66:1, 1,85:1 or 2,35:1) by reducing the disadvantages:

  • when one wants to preserve the original image of film, the horizontal bands black higher and lower are smaller than with the 4/3;
  • when one cuts edges left and right of the image (system Pan and Scan) to use the maximum of surface of the screen, one removes less image than with the 4/3.
The format 16/9 does not correspond to any cinematographic standard.

The 16/9 can thus reproduce the films made to the format 1,66:1 or 1,85:1 which represent the essence of the film production, with black bands of less great width (on the left and on the right in the case of the 1,66:1, in top and bottom in the case of the 1,85:1), or while cutting little. Films made into 21/9 Cinemascope (2,35: 1) will thus have always black bands in top and bottom, though definitely finer than on a television set 4/3, or will be amputees on the sides (pan&scan). In the same way, the films with the format says “standard”, silent films, talking films about before the Années 1960 and recent films by artistic choices, turned respectively to the formats 1,33:1 and 1,375:1, will present black bands on the sides left and rights, if one wants to respect their format and framing of origin. To note that the image of right-hand side presents an anomaly It is about the format scope 2,35:1 and not 2.25.
