Format APS
The format APS ( Advanced Photo System = Advanced Photographic System ) is a format of film in Photographie introduces in 1996 by Kodak, Fujifilm, Minolta, Nikon, Canon and some other manufacturers.
Properties
The film measurement 24 mm of width (thus smaller than the Format 35 mm) and is used to record a basic image of 30.2×16.7 mm (format known as " H" , with the report/ratio 16/9). This basic format can be recadré with pulling (in height or width) to obtain 2 additional formats of image:
- realignment in width: 25.1×16.7 mm - format C ( traditional ), report/ratio are equivalent to the 24x36
- realignment in height: 30.2×9.5 mm - format P ( panoramic ), ratio of 3/1
The choice of the format to the catch of sight does nothing but indicate to the gunner which realignment to choose: the format H remains that actually recorded on the film. The 2 additional formats are thus pseudo-formats, contrary for example to panoramic formats in 35 mm (see the Hasselblad XPan) where the image recorded on film has a size operating to the maximum significant surface available.
The APS has also a magnetic band laid down on film. This one records for each image, in addition to its format of pulling, of information such as the hour of the catch of sight, the data of exposure, a possible legend, etc This band stores also the number of the last recorded sight and thus makes it possible to rewind the film, then to reintegrate it later in the apparatus - this one then unrolling automatically film until the 1st virgin sight.
Success?
In spite of its some technological advances (the magnetic band mainly) and in spite of an intense marketing, format APS forever successful to dominate the market. Its smaller film format meant a lower quality of image, from where disinterest of the professionals. Moreover, the argument of the miniaturization of the apparatuses (due to the smaller format of the cartridge and film) was not due vis-a-vis similar developments in 35 Misters Enfin, the replacement of silver by the numerical one like basic technology (and miniaturization going with) signed its death warrant.
This said, some films APS still on sale are found, because even if it did not have discounted success, of many compact of this type are still in circulation.
