The format 16 mm is that of a cinematographic Pellicule of a width of 16 Misters Lancé by Kodak in 1923, the goal was to propose a format and a material much more economic, lighter and easier to implement than the 35 mm standard, initially for the Cinéma amateur but also for the catch of sight in report. The 16 mm was also the format of the Scopitone S.

It became gradually a practically today abandoned professional format with the profit of the Vidéo, but still used by certain productions especially in format Super 16 .

16 mm (standard)

The film presents a perforation by image, with the height of the inter-image. At the origin the film presented perforations on each side, but the appearance of the sound Cinéma synchronous makes necessary to have a track (sound magnetic or optical) and generalized the use of film with perforations on only one side.

The size of the window to the catch of sight and the size of the projected image are like always slightly different.

The report/ratio of image standard is 1:1,33. The size of the image obtained with the catch of sight is of 10,22 X 7,42 mm

Super 16

Currently, the film 16 mm is especially used for catches of sights in the format Super 16 which gives a report/ratio of image of 1:1,66. This report/ratio is appropriate better for inflation in 35 mm. and with the transfer on video to the format 16:9 (1: 1,78). Into super 16, one can use only film " simple perforation" , which is about the only available one today. It is besides why the film 16 mm virgin mono-perforation is sometimes indicated like " film super 16". As example, here markings which one finds on a box of 122 meters (400 feet): With the catch of sight, framing can be made into 1,66,1,85 or, even 2,40. The image printed at the time of the catch of sight has a dimension of 12,39 X 7,49 Misters. The really exploited image depends on the report/ratio of framing:
  • report/ratio 1,66: image 12,39 X 7,49 Misters

  • report/ratio 1,85: image 12,39 X 6,66 Misters
  • report/ratio 2,40: image 12,39 X 5,16 Misters

Given up by the majority of the large productions, it however is still used in short film because of its cost, like out of clip, without forgetting many telefilms, because of request of the chains for 16:9.
