The format 16 mm is that of a cinematographic Pellicule of a width of 16 Misters Lancé by Kodak in 1923, the goal was to propose a format and a material much more economic, lighter and easier to implement than the 35 mm standard, initially for the Cinéma amateur but also for the catch of sight in report. The 16 mm was also the format of the Scopitone S.
It became gradually a practically today abandoned professional format with the profit of the Vidéo, but still used by certain productions especially in format Super 16 .
The size of the window to the catch of sight and the size of the projected image are like always slightly different.
The report/ratio of image standard is 1:1,33. The size of the image obtained with the catch of sight is of 10,22 X 7,42 mm
report/ratio 1,66: image 12,39 X 7,49 Misters
Given up by the majority of the large productions, it however is still used in short film because of its cost, like out of clip, without forgetting many telefilms, because of request of the chains for 16:9.
