The form of mathematics is a work in 5 tome cheeses directed by Giuseppe Peano, and written by this one and its collaborators, and who aims at expressing in an organized way the principal mathematical theories in the language symbolic system introduced by Peano as from 1888. The publication of the form of mathematics was spread out of 1895 to 1908. The first four volumes were published in French, the fifth and the last was published under the name of formulario mathematico in Latino sine flexione, Latin simplified invented by Peano to be used as international auxiliary language.
The publication of the form is preceded by an introduction published in 1894, always in French, under the title of notations of mathematical logic where Peano presents the notations which it already introduced into preceding articles.
Even if the proposals of the form are not directly readable today by Mathématicien S or Logicien S contemporaries without a minimum of training, some of its notations always have course today, or directly inspired some of the notations of logic and current mathematics.
If the work of Peano caused the enthusiasm of some of its contemporaries like Bertrand Russell, this one was far from being general.
According to Louis Couturat, Peano does not assert the term of Pasigraphie, which is employed in this connection by Ernst Schröder, “probably in an intention pejorative” , and popularized by the works of Henri Poincaré. The pasigraphy indicates a writing of which the ambition is to be universal. For Peano its language symbolic is also a tool for analysis: “Because the notations of logic are not only one tachigraphy to represent in a shortened form the proposals for a mathematics; they are a powerful instrument to analyze the proposals and the theories” .
