History

Forie is a very young commune since it was creates in 1874. It was born from the Ground grouping borrowed from its three communes bordering: Ambert, Job, Valcivières. Its name comes from the occitan " faure" , the factory, because of the strong presence of water mills. As of the 14th century, the valley of Batifole with attracted the paper makers who saw in his hydraulic force and the purity of his water, the ideal brook for the manufacture of the Papier, flourishing activity in the surroundings. The commune will not count less than 10 mills of which some are still well preserved today.

With the advent of the industrialization of paper at the 19th century, the paper mills must find a new sector to remain. The industry of the Tresse attracted once again by the hydraulic potential of Batifol is installed durably on the commune.

Today the village counts two more majority employers:

  • the Bern company which produces Gaines and Tresses
  • the Saltings Bernard whose Saucisson is very famous in the area

Other industries are still present on the commune in particular on the sites of the old paper mills…
