The forgotten Royaumes ( Forgotten Realms in English) are a imaginary Monde created by the author and Canadian originator ED Greenwood for the Roleplay Donjons and Dragons . The action proceeds mainly on “supercontinent” of Féérune (Faerûn) , which composes the planet Abeir-Toril. The magic plays a prevalent part there, as in the majority of the universe of campaigns of Keeps & Dragons.

Although being initially the personal countryside of ED Greenwood, detailed in long series of articles of the American magazine Dragon , the forgotten Kingdoms became soon the preferred universe of the players of Keeps and Dragons in the Années 1990.

The popularity of the forgotten Kingdoms was also nourished by many novels (in particular exploits of the famous hero Drow Drizzt Do' Urden or archimage Elminster) and many roleplays on computer, such Pool off Radiance , Baldur' S Gate , Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights .

The Kingdoms conceal many people inspired of civilizations of our world, while having the color and the ingeniousness of original and diversified cultures.

Outline of the universe of the forgotten Kingdoms

Geography

The forgotten Kingdoms are located on the planet Abeir-Toril. Other grounds of this world also lodge other campaigns of Donjons and Dragons . Abeir-Toril is consisted of the continents of Féérune, Kara-Tur, Zakhara and Maztica, as well as other still not-explored smaller continents. However, the majority of the publications related to the forgotten Kingdoms relate to Féérune itself.

The universe are composed of several plane of existence, kinds of worlds parallel having each one their own rules and topic (fire, water, shade, etc). To pass from a plan to the other, it is necessary to have recourse to the magic. Whereas Abeir-Toril is on the material plan, or plane primary education, certain adventures can proceed in other plans of existence. Visitors of other plans besides are usually used like elements of the intrigue in the forgotten Kingdoms. It should be noted that in their the first two versions, the forgotten Kingdoms divided a specific Cosmologie with the other executives of countryside, that of the Grande Wheel and its Plans outsides; however, in 2001, a reorganization leads to a cosmology particular to the Kingdoms forgotten for the 3rd edition.

It is interesting to note that certain areas of Féérune take again a particular vision of the Medieval-fantastic or are derived from an existing area of the real-world. There it is probably one of the reasons explaining the success of the forgotten Kingdoms, each player who can find the vision which it is made of the roleplay.

For example Mitan, the area most known of the players, is comparable with Europe of the Moyen-âge. The legends Persians are taken again by Calimshan and Zakhara, with often desert and hot landscapes, the ancient Egypt inspired the empire of Mulhorand, the Asia has its counterpart in the continent of Kara-Tur, the equatorial Africa inspired the jungle of Chult, and Maztica exploits the resources and the new people of the beginnings of the America.

The forgotten Kingdoms are however not a copy of the real-world. One can find the bases of the inspiration of the originators but Abeir-Toril is an alive world, with its own legends and its adventures in perpetual evolution thanks in particular to the players and the dependant novels (editions Black Fleuve for the French versions).
