A forgiveness is a typically Breton form of Pèlerinage and one of the most traditional demonstrations of the popular Foi in Brittany. Of very old origin, since probably related to the evangelization of the country by the Monk S Celtic S, as of the 5th century, they are connected with the “parades” of the Saint Patrick in Ireland or with New York.

Typical forgiveness

As its name indicates it, a forgiveness falls under a pénitentielle step Christian: the Catholiques go in Pèlerinage either on the tomb of the Saint, or in a place which is dedicated to him, because of an appearance, as with Querrien, or of discovered more or less miraculous of a Statue, as with Holy-Anne-with Auray. Paroisse S, movements or corporations are made in constitutional body, bearing there forces banners and cross of processions, all more magnificentes and worked the ones that the others.

Displacement until the place of appointment, like the procession, translate the desire to be started to obtain Saint celebrated, by offering tirednesses of the way, which he intercedes for his pilgrims. This is to be brought closer to the conviction of Christian Foi that the human condition on this ground is a peregrination towards the Kingdom of the Ciel, Nouvelle Promised land. In this logic, the pilgrims are invited to confess their faults to the priests present, before taking part in the Messe, often followed solemn Vêpre S. Once the granted discharge, it is necessary to be delighted and it is not true forgiveness without festive dimension, which can take the form of a Kermesse or even of a Fun fair.

The president of forgiveness, often an Ecclesiastical of the high ranking, bears the name of “pardonnor”. When there are some, he will carry during part of the procession the Relique S venerated. This honor falls, during the remainder of walk, to those which were considered to be worthiest by it or more symbolic systems of the groupings represented.

Principal forgiveness

Some of them are held at the time of religious holidays, like the Assomption, on August 15th. The forgiveness dedicated to the holy mother of God most, is followed besides by those of his/her own mother, Sainte Anne (Holy-Anne-the-Fen, Holy-Anne-with Auray), owner of the Brittany. However the majority honor with the Saint S buildings because of their capacity to look after or protect such or such category of people or activities: forgiveness of Holy Gildas, known as of the horses, at the beginning of June, in the Trégor, or of Guirec saint for the girls to marry, forgiveness of patron saint of each Parish, etc

The forgiveness of Holy Yves, with Tréguier, honors, as for him, the owner of all the legal professions: its radiation is international today since thousands of pilgrims, official or anonymous, flowing of all the countries of the world, processionnent with humility and enthusiasm of its tomb, set up in the Cathédrale, with the Paroisse of its birthplace, in behaviors of lawyer S, Magistrat S, bishop S, of academics, members of brotherhoods… or as simple believers.

Like example of singular forgiveness, one can quote the forgiveness with the Beurre of Spézet (It should be noted that formerly the search of butter in many communes of the Brittany center was practiced like Langonnet) or the Pardon of the motorcyclists to Porcaro
